Bowl of Water
“Bowls of Water” is an installation that is based on the simple metaphor of a bowl of water. A whole world exists in a bowl of water – in its contents and in the reflection of the outside world on the water’s surface. This concept served as a starting point to explore ideas of landscape and place through ceramic sculpture, photography, poetry and sound. The entire piece has been a collaboration with Susan Gans, photographer;Kim Schnuelle, poet; and Stu Witmer, sound artist
This piece not only was a way to portray and construct real and imaginary places but also to create a narrative about those places. I also looked at the viewer's place in relation to a landscape and the context within which those places are positioned. Landscapes can be private or public, real or imaginary, safe or dangerous, understandable or ambiguous, viewed from the outside or experienced from within, with or without boundaries.
